January can be a quiet month in Australia, but that’s not to say things aren’t happening in Sydney. In fact, there’s a surprising number of events and exhibitions going on in the Harbour City in the new year.
From alfresco events you can bring the whole family to, to exhibitions, performances and shows destined to delight, they make a very compelling case for staying right here in Sydney all summer long. Below, we round up the events to mark your calendar for this January.
What’s happening: Sydney Festival
When is it: From January 4-26
What to expect: Almost an entire month jam-packed with free and ticketed events spanning music, art, theatre and dance. We guarantee there won’t be a dull moment. Stop by the QVB…and pick up a few sushi rolls from Sushi Hub on Lower Ground 2 to eat as you wander down to Darling Harbour to see the Swing! Circus.
What’s happening: Westpac Open Air Cinema at Mrs. Macquarie’s Chair
When is it: From January 9 to February 18
What to expect: A line-up of must-see blockbuster and indie films playing at Australia’s most spectacular theatre. With views of the Harbour Bridge and Sydney’s stunning skyline, good luck keeping your eyes on the screen. Stop by the QVB… for a Happy Hour drink and light dinner at Manon Brasserie on Ground Floor before heading down to see The Room Next Door at 8:30pm on January 12.
What’s happening: The Lord of the Rings: A Musical Tale
When is it: From January 7
What to expect: A theatrical delight for Ringers the city over. If you love the books and movies, a singing and dancing take on the tale is guaranteed to win over even the musical-averse. Stop by the QVB… for a mid-morning brunch stop at Stitch Coffee on Ground Floor before the 1:30pm show. Their bacon and egg roll and specialty coffee are guaranteed to tide you over till you can get your hands on a theatre snack.
What’s happening: Sydney Lunar New Year Festival
When is it: From January 29 to February 17
What to expect: One of the biggest Lunar New Year festivals outside of Asia, Sydney’s Lunar New Year event will see Sydney transform with 19 days of street parties, live entertainment, delicious food, lion dances, dragon boats, and art and light installations.
Stop by the QVB… to pick up something fabulous and red to wear. Don’t forget to hit the Ground Floor for accessories, too.
